The limitations to current pharmacological therapies have highlighted the need to explore what is referred to as alternative or integrative care for headaches. Many people who suffer from migraines are unfortunately led to believe that medication is the only option to deal with the pain. And migraine medications are some of the most dangerous drugs on the market due to their toxicity, potency, and potential for harm. Chiropractic spinal adjustments are one of the most effective interventions for those suffering with migraine headaches. This research evaluated the effectiveness of chiropractic care for those suffering from migraines. The results were remarkable and as follows:

• The study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of published randomised clinical trials evaluating the evidence regarding spinal manipulation as an alternative or integrative therapy in reducing migraine pain and disability.

• The authors identified six randomised controlled trials eligible for their analysis that included 677 subjects.

• Intervention duration range from 2 to 6 months, and the number of treatments range from 8 to 16. Outcomes include the number of migraine days, migraine pain/intensity, and migraine disability.

• An estimate of 38 million adults in the United States are migraine sufferers, and 91% experience migraine associated disability.

• Approximately 40% of those with episodic migraines have unmet treatment needs, including dissatisfaction with treatment and moderate or severe headache related disability.

• Commonly prescribed medications may increase the risk of medication overuse headaches, allodynia, and dependence.

• The limitations to current pharmacological therapies have highlighted the need to explore alternative and integrative treatment for migraine.

• There is a need for evidence-based non-pharmacological approaches to treat migraines, and to understand whether spinal manipulation is an effective approach for treatment of migraine headaches.

• The results of the study indicated that spinal manipulation had a greater impact on reducing the number of migraine days compared to the controls with an overall large effect size.

• In this meta-analysis, spinal manipulation was associated with significant reductions in migraine days compared to those in active control groups which suggests that the results seen for the intervention group are not solely due to attention or expectation.

• The mechanism by which spinal manipulation may help migraines is through the re-balance of the nervous system nuclei or by the reduction of pro inflammatory substances.

• Spinal manipulation stimulates the neural inhibitory systems by activating central descending inhibitory pathways.

Approximately 38 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches. Ninety-one percent of those experiencing regular migraine headaches suffer migraine-associated disabilities related directly to their headaches. Millions are spent on the treatment of migraines with medications that only address the symptoms instead of dealing with the underlying cause. Spinal adjustments improve function in the brain and central nervous system and help balance hormones associated with migraine headache pain. Unfortunately, many migraine sufferers are unaware of the benefits that chiropractic spinal adjusting can have on their headaches. All migraine sufferers deserve to understand and experience the benefits of chiropractic care as it relates to their pain.
